Professional BiographyDr. Shafer received his medical degree from the University of Miami, Florida. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. After completing his medical internship at the University of Miami, Jacksonville Memorial Hospital, Miami, Florida, he completed a residency in Neurology at the University of Florida, Shands Hospital, Gainesville, Florida. Dr. Shafer is board certified by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Shafer is currently involved in multiple research projects involved in stroke and multiple sclerosis. Dr. Shafer is the Medical Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center of Vero Beach and is currently the Medical Director of the MS Centers of Florida Foundation. Dr. Shafer has been the Department of Neurology Chairman at Indian River Memorial Hospital from 2000-2004. He is currently the Medical Director of the Indian River Memorial Hospital Stroke Unit. Dr. Shafer remains active in hospital leadership and currently serves on the Medical Executive Committee of HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital and is active in a search committee at Indian River Memorial Hospital to recruit a cardiovascular team to bring a comprehensive cardiac program to Indian River County. Personal Biography Dr. Shafer has lived in Vero Beach since 1977. Upon finishing his training he returned to Vero Beach to practice in 1997. He is originally from Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Shafer met his wife Helen in 1983. They eventually married in 1988. Dr. Shafer has five step-children, now ages 23-30. The eldest, Anne Marie, is a school teacher at a Catholic school in Vero Beach, The second oldest, Arthur, is president and owner of Fusion Builders in Orlando, Florida. Robert, the third oldest child is currently working with Arthur in his contracting company. Daniel, the second youngest child, is currently attending courses at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. The youngest, Joanne, is currently in school studying to be a physical therapy assistant. Dr. Shafer’s past interests have included photography, sailing, scuba diving and body building. More recently, he has become involved in long distance running and triathlons. He has completed multiple marathons and completed, in 2005, his first Ironman distance triathlon. His wife, Helen, is an avid athlete having been a highly competitive tennis player in the past and currently enjoys long distance running and triathlons as well. |
